Tools For ATV Maintenance
Owning an ATV is like owning a thrill machine, but these powerful vehicles aren’t invincible—and they’re a pretty big investment. It’s important that you enjoy every ride, then come home and ensure your ATV is still in good shape. We here at Moroney’s Motorsports want to help you get the most out of your ATV for years to come, so we’ve put together a few of the most important tools for ATV maintenance, below. To learn more, or to see the ATVs we have for sale, contact our store in New Windsor, New York, today!
Allen and Hex Bit Sockets
A surprising number of fasteners on ATVs are hex heads. Also called Allen wrenches, these L-shaped keys work pretty similarly to screwdrivers, so there’s no secret techniques you’ll need to know to operate them. However, an Allen wrench relies on good angles and sufficient torque to get things going, so a hex head socket and a few ratchets of different sizes can make a world of difference if you’re struggling.
Tire Pressure Gauge and Repair Kit
Like most modern vehicles, your ATV relies on rubber tires in good health to keep rolling and keep you safe. Unfortunately, tires are one of the vehicle’s biggest weak points. You’ll need a tire pressure gauge to help you keep the air inside the tire at the right psi, since an under- or over-filled tire can overwork your engine and lead to blowouts.
Tires also naturally wear down over time, and there’s always the chance you’ll find an unusually sharp rock in the next mud hole you visit. You’ll want a tire repair kit to help get the ATV back home or to the service center, including:
- CO2 cartridges.
- Glue.
- Patches.
- Plugs.
Tire Iron and Jack
Once you get back to a location where you can change out the tire, it’s handy to be able to do it yourself. There are also some damaged tires that you just can’t patch. In either situation, you’ll want a tire iron and a jack to help you lift the ATV off the affected tire and remove it. A two-ton scissor jack does the trick and can be folded up and stored on the ATV just in case.
Screwdrivers and Wrenches
And of course, you’ll need all the staple tools. You should have both Phillips head and flathead screwdrivers, ideally with multiple sizes of each. You’ll also want a number of standard solid wrenches to help you remove or tighten various nuts and bolts on the ATV.
