Fun Facts About Dirt Bikes
Also called off-road motorcycles, dirt bikes are a thrilling and speedy way to explore the outdoors and get your adrenaline pumping. As commonplace as they are, though, there are a few tidbits that not many people know about these lean machines!
We here at Moroney’s Motorsports believe in knowing your ride inside and out, so we’ve put together a bit of trivia about dirt bikes that may surprise you! To learn more, or to see the dirt bikes we have for sale, contact our store in New Windsor, New York, today!
Dirt Bikes vs. Chainsaws
As odd as this may sound, if you were to compare your average chainsaw engine with the one in the average dirt bike, it might end in a draw! Dirt bike engines range between 50cc and 500cc—they don’t need much, afterall, and a smaller engine can actually help navigate tight spaces and undergrowth. Meanwhile, the largest chainsaws out there have an engine displacement of 50cc, making them equal to the smallest dirt bike engines.
Tall Lightweights
When we say lightweights, of course, we’re talking about a dirt bike’s actual weight. Of any motorcycle, dirt bikes are the lightest on the market. Most models are under 200 lbs thanks to the materials used in their construction, from aluminum frames and wheels to plastic fenders and panels.
They’re also the tallest type of motorcycle out there. Because of the bumpy paths they take, they utilize between 12 and 13 inches of suspension in both the front and real. That allows them to negate more and larger bumps and shocks, keeping you comfortable on any terrain.
Health Benefits
It may surprise you to learn that riding a dirt bike is actually pretty healthy, despite the occasional scrapes and bruises. Motorcycles in general are a full-body workout, since you engage your legs, arms, and core muscles just to steer, and dirt bikes take it even farther. Most of your ride will be spent in a standing position, ensuring you never skip leg day.
And of course there are the mental health benefits of riding! The adrenaline rushes and exercise release endorphins, improving your mood and heart health. You also need to maintain focus and switch mental tracks in an instant, keeping your brain flexible and hard-working.
