Bringing Your Dog On UTV Rides
UTVs make a lot of rides impossibly fun, and every experience is better when shared with man’s best friend. But your dog isn’t always on top of vehicle safety rules, so your pet’s safety on these rides is on you. We here at Moroney’s Motorsports want you and your fuzzy buddy to have safe fun, so we’ve put together some safety tips for riding your UTV with your dog. If you want to know more, contact our store in New Windsor, New York, today!
Safe Transportation
Dogs are sweet and some are even smart, but they still need our help with safety guidelines. They won’t read a sign that asks them to keep all paws inside the moving vehicle, and they might walk around in or jump out of your UTV at an inopportune moment.
A crate can keep both you and the pup safe on your rides, helping the dog to stay in one safe spot. Make sure the crate is well-secured to the UTV, however—even slow, small bumps can send it flying, which is a hazard to your dog and you. Simple tie-downs will do the trick, but make sure they’re stable with a test-drive before you head out with the dog inside. If it’s going to be cold, consider adding a kennel cover to help keep your dog warm.
For dogs that aren’t used to crates, you’ll want to train them with treats and toys to associate the crate with positive things.
Pup Essentials
Just like you, your dog needs the right gear to make the most of a UTV ride. You’ll need a water bowl to keep them hydrated and a pet first aid kit in case of emergencies. You might also want an LED collar light to help your dog see and be seen better in low light, and a brush can help you keep your dog’s coat clear of debris and stickers.
Long Trip Planning
Any time your UTV trip includes camping, you’ll want to make sure your dog is up to the overnight stay. Take them by your vet to see if they’re in good health beforehand, and make sure you bring all the overnight supplies they’ll need. Bring more food than you think you’ll need, and a bed that has your dog’s scent on it already to make them more comfortable.
Finally, do your best to stick with as many normal routines as possible on your trip. Stick to the meal- and bedtimes your dog is accustomed to to help keep their stress levels lower. They might be having fun, but lots of stimulation and a new schedule can overwhelm our four-legged friends easily.
We hope you and your pup are able to make the most of your next UTV outing together! If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at Moroney’s Motorsports. We proudly serve the people of Newburgh, New York—let us serve you today!
